Websites for painters: what they need, what they cost

Draft. This page has not been editorially reviewed yet.

This page is for you if you run a painting and decorating business in Austria. Whether flats, stairwells or façades: your customers mainly want to know two things. What does your work look like, and how quickly will they get a quote? Many painters' websites answer neither question well. Instead of your own before-and-after photos, there are stock images of smiling people with paint rollers. The enquiry form doesn't ask for area, number of rooms or location. Then you have to ring back about every enquiry or drive out for a site visit that isn't worth it. Something is often missing from the Impressum (legal notice) too. Maler und Anstreicher (painter and decorator) is a regulated trade. That's why your chamber, professional title, a reference to the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act) and the supervisory authority belong in it. Here you'll see which pages a painter's website needs, what goes in the Impressum and what the Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (Accessibility Act) means for you.

Mandatory information for painters and decorators

„Maler und Anstreicher (§ 94 Z 47 GewO 1994: Maler und Anstreicher; Lackierer; Vergolder und Staffierer; Schilderherstellung (verbundenes Handwerk))“ is a regulated trade (reglementiertes Gewerbe). Responsible body at the Wirtschaftskammer (Chamber of Commerce): Landesinnung der Maler und Tapezierer der WKO Steiermark (division Gewerbe und Handwerk). On top of the general imprint (Impressum) details, your website needs:

  • Chamber membership: Wirtschaftskammer Steiermark (Styrian Chamber of Commerce), Landesinnung (regional guild) der Maler und Tapezierer
  • Professional title: Maler und Anstreicher (trade), awarded in Austria
  • Reference to professional regulations: Gewerbeordnung (GewO, Trade Regulation Act), available at www.ris.bka.gv.at
  • Supervisory authority: the responsible trade authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft or Magistrat at your location)
  • UID number (VAT ID), if you have one; Firmenbuch (company register) number and court, if registered

What else belongs in the imprint depends on your legal form: Impressum (legal notice) for sole traders (EPU) and e.U., Impressum (legal notice) for a GmbH, Disclosure under § 25 MedienG and Impressum under § 24 MedienG.

Contact form and enquiries: Does the Accessibility Act apply?

A painter's website with projects and an enquiry form is usually an information site. According to the WKO, the BaFG (Accessibility Act) does not apply to pure information sites with no way to order or book; whether a contact form alone is enough is disputed. If a private customer can firmly book an appointment online, such as a site visit, you are within its scope. As a micro-enterprise (fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in turnover or balance sheet total), you are exempt for services, according to the Sozialministeriumservice.

Common mistakes on painter and decorator websites

  • In your Impressum (legal notice) you call yourself “Malermeister” or “Malerei”, but your registered trade (Maler und Anstreicher) is missing.
  • You use photos of other people's façades or stock images instead of your own before-and-after shots.
  • The form doesn't ask for area, number of rooms or location. Without this, you can't estimate a quote.
  • The supervisory authority is missing from the Impressum, or you name the guild there.
  • You write “prices on request” without explaining how your quote is worked out.
  • Phone number and service area aren't on the home page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Maler und Anstreicher a regulated trade?

Yes. Under § 94 Z 47 of the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act), Maler und Anstreicher (painter and decorator) is a regulated trade, as a linked craft with varnishers, gilders and stafferers as well as sign making. You need a certificate of competence. In the Impressum (legal notice), you state your professional title, the country in which it was awarded and a reference to the Gewerbeordnung with a link to ris.bka.gv.at.

Which guild is responsible for painters in Styria?

It's the Landesinnung der Maler und Tapezierer (regional guild of painters and paperhangers) of WKO Steiermark, in the crafts and trades division. At federal level, it's the Bundesinnung der Maler und Tapezierer. In the Impressum (legal notice), you name Wirtschaftskammer Steiermark as your chamber, ideally with the Landesinnung. The supervisory authority is separate: that's the trade authority, i.e. the BH (district authority) or Magistrat.

Do I need an accessible website as a painter?

The Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (Accessibility Act) has applied since 28 June 2025 to consumer services in electronic commerce. According to the WKO, a pure information site with no way to order or book is not covered. Whether a contact form alone is enough is disputed. As a micro-enterprise with fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in turnover or balance sheet total, you are exempt for services.
