Websites for masseurs: what they need, what they cost

Draft. This page has not been editorially reviewed yet.

You work as a commercial masseur in Styria, in your own studio, in a shared practice or as a mobile service. Your customers are looking for relaxation, a break from work or a gift. On your website they want to see which massages you offer, how long they take, what they cost and when an appointment is free. The most common mistake in this sector is about wording. Many sites talk about “Heilmassage” (medical massage) or “therapy”. According to the WKO, however, commercial masseurs don't work for therapeutic purposes. Their work is about improving well-being. Massage for healing purposes always requires a diagnosis and referral by a doctor and is a matter for Heilmasseure (medical masseurs) under the MMHmG (Medical Masseurs Act). Under the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act), massage is a regulated trade. Here you'll find which pages you need and what belongs in the Impressum (legal notice).

Mandatory information for masseurs

„Massage – § 94 Z 48 GewO 1994“ is a regulated trade (reglementiertes Gewerbe). Responsible body at the Wirtschaftskammer (Chamber of Commerce): Landesinnung der Fußpfleger, Kosmetiker und Masseure der WKO Steiermark (division Gewerbe und Handwerk). On top of the general imprint (Impressum) details, your website needs:

  • Chamber membership: member of the Wirtschaftskammer Steiermark (Styrian Chamber of Commerce), Landesinnung (regional guild) der Fußpfleger, Kosmetiker und Masseure
  • Professional title: gewerblicher Masseur or gewerbliche Masseurin (commercial masseur), awarded in Austria
  • Reference to professional regulations: Gewerbeordnung 1994 (GewO, Trade Regulation Act), available at www.ris.bka.gv.at
  • Supervisory authority: the locally responsible trade authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft or Magistrat)
  • If you are also a Heilmasseur (medical masseur), also name the Medizinischer Masseur- und Heilmasseurgesetz (MMHmG, Medical Masseurs Act) as a professional regulation; this profession is not subject to the GewO
  • The same information, complete, on Instagram, Facebook and other profiles too

What else belongs in the imprint depends on your legal form: Impressum (legal notice) for sole traders (EPU) and e.U., Impressum (legal notice) on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and co., Disclosure under § 25 MedienG and Impressum under § 24 MedienG.

Online booking, Selling gift vouchers online: Does the Accessibility Act apply?

If people can book a massage or buy a voucher from you online, the WKO says that is a consumer service in electronic commerce, covered by the Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (BaFG, Accessibility Act) since 28 June 2025. As a micro-enterprise with fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in annual turnover or annual balance sheet total, you are exempt from the requirements for services. According to the WKO, a pure information site with no booking or ordering doesn't fall under it at all. Larger businesses, such as massage departments with many employees, must make the booking and the route to it accessible.

Common mistakes on masseur websites

  • You offer “Heilmassage” (medical massage) or “therapy” although you work commercially and not as a Heilmasseur.
  • The price list gives prices but not how long the massage lasts.
  • Types of massage are listed by name only, with no short explanation of what happens.
  • Vouchers are only available on site, although they're a popular gift.
  • Your phone number isn't a tap-to-call link, and you don't answer during a massage. There's no online booking.
  • Stock photos of spa resorts instead of photos of your own room.
  • Your Impressum (legal notice) is missing the professional title, Landesinnung and the reference to the Gewerbeordnung.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a commercial masseur and a Heilmasseur?

Commercial massage is a regulated trade under § 94 Z 48 GewO (Trade Regulation Act). According to the WKO, commercial masseurs don't work for therapeutic purposes but to improve well-being. Heilmasseure (medical masseurs) and medizinische Masseure are regulated by the Medizinischer Masseur- und Heilmasseurgesetz (MMHmG, Medical Masseurs Act), which is not subject to the Gewerbeordnung. Heilmasseure may also work self-employed; according to the WKO, medizinische Masseure may only work as employees.

As a commercial masseur, can I write “Heilmassage” on my website?

You shouldn't. According to the WKO, commercial masseurs don't work for therapeutic purposes. Massage for healing purposes always requires a diagnosis and referral by a doctor, and these massages are carried out by Heilmasseure (medical masseurs) under the MMHmG. So describe your services with words such as relaxation, well-being or balance. If you're also a Heilmasseur, keep the two offers clearly separate.

Does my online booking have to be accessible?

That depends on the size of your business. Since 28 June 2025, the Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (Accessibility Act) also applies to appointment bookings through which a consumer contract is initiated or concluded. Micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in annual turnover or balance sheet total are exempt for services. As a one-person studio, it usually doesn't affect you.

As a masseur, do I need an Impressum on Instagram?

Yes. According to the WKO, the information requirements of the E-Commerce-Gesetz (E-Commerce Act) apply to every form of electronic content, including social media. The details must be complete on every profile you use to promote your massages. That includes name, address, contact, chamber membership, professional title, the reference to the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act) and your supervisory authority.
